Baldness Cure “On Sale Within 5 Years” (22nd March, 2012)

A cream or lotion to stop men going bald could be on sale in the next five years. Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania in the USA have found the reason why so many men lose their hair. It is because of a protein in the scalp that creates baldness – it stops hair from growing. Drugs that can block the protein are already available, which means companies could soon start making the hair-loss cure. Scientists say it could even make new hair start to grow on a bald head.

The possible cure could change the life of many men worried about being bald. It would also do away with the need for wigs or expensive hair transplants. The study’s lead researcher Dr George Cotsarelis said: “Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. By the age of 50, about 50 per cent of men will have some degree of…baldness. By the age of 70, 70 per cent have it.” He added: “There is a large number of people who would rather have hair than not [have it].”
