Brazilian police have started its efforts to make the country safer before the 2014 soccer World Cup. At the weekend, police went into Rochina, Brazil’s largest favela (slum), to clear it of drugs and drug dealers. It is the first time for decades that the police have entered Rochina, a hillside town that overlooks Rio’s wealthiest areas. Police officers took control of Rochina without firing any bullets. Drug traffickers who live there did not fight back.

Rio de Janeiro leaders say they plan to move into dozens more favelas before the FIFA 2014 World Cup begins. More than 1.5 million people live in 1,000 slums on hillsides across Rio. That’s around a third of the city’s population. So far, police have arrested six people and found about a ton of illegal drugs. The city now has the opportunity to provide better services because the police are more in control. The favelas badly need trash collection services.
