The European Union has opened an office in the Libyan city of Benghazi. The opening is a huge show of support for the rebels fighting Muammar Gaddafi. The head of the EU’s foreign policy, Catherine Ashton, made a speech at the opening ceremony. She said: “It is a great honour to formally open the EU office in Benghazi…I have seen the vision of the Libyan people today all around. I saw the posters as I came from the airport with the words, ‘We have a dream’”.

The Benghazi office will focus on non-humanitarian needs. EU representatives talked with officials from Libya’s National Transitional Council about security, border management, the economy, health and education. Ms Ashton said the new office was a sign of the EU’s “unfaltering support for the Libyan people”. Meanwhile, NATO launched another 49 missions near Tripoli. They hit ammunition dumps and air defence radars.
