Asylum Seekers Riot in Australia (21st April, 2011)

Asylum seekers at a detention centre in Australia have destroyed buildings and property in a riot. The riots started on Wednesday night at the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney. Around 100 detainees set fire to nine buildings and clashed with riot police. The protestors also threw stones and pieces of furniture at firefighters who came to put out the fires. The rioters destroyed a computer room, a kitchen, a laundry and medical facilities. Asylum seekers have made similar protests in recent years in Australia.

Australia’s immigration department, which runs the centre, said the fires were now out. They condemned what they said was the "appalling" behaviour of the rioters. Immigration Minister Chris Bowen warned that he would not tolerate this kind of violence. Brami Jegan, from the Refugee Action Coalition, said riots were because of stress and frustration and “a cry for help”. Jegan told Australia’s ABC news that some people have been in the centre for nearly two years.
