Lionel Messi - World Player of the Year Again (11th January, 2011)

Lionel Messi is the world’s best football player for the second year in a row. He won the FIFA Ballon d'Or ahead of his Barcelona team-mates Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Messi, 23, scored 60 goals for his club and country in 2010, although he didn’t perform very well at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He told reporters: "To be honest, I didn't expect to win today, but it was already great to be here next to my two mates. To win it makes it even more special. I want to share with all of my friends, my family, all the [Barcelona fans] and the Argentinians."

The award for the women’s player of the year went to Brazilian forward Marta. It is the fifth straight time she has picked up the prize. She won with 38.2 per cent of the votes, beating Germany's Birgit Prinz and Kosovo’s Lira Bajramaj. Coach of the year went to current Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho after leading Inter Milan to the Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup titles. He became famous when he was Chelsea’s coach for calling himself the “Special One”. He said: "The most important things for me are the collective titles, not the individual ones."
