The annual sauna world championship final in Finland has ended in tragedy. One of the competitors died because of problems caused by the heat. Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy, who was in his 60s, spent six minutes in temperatures above 110C. Judges noticed something was seriously wrong and had to drag him out of the sauna. Another competitor, Timo Kaukonnen from Finland, also needed medical treatment. Witnesses say his body was covered in burns. Kaukonnen is a five-time winner of the event and reigning champion.

Competition officials say this is the end of the tournament. It started in Finland in 1999. The winner of the event is the person who can stay in the sauna the longest. The contest organizer Ossi Arvela told reporters it was properly run: "All the rules were followed and enough first aid personnel were in place," he said. ESPN columnist Rick Reilly described his first 30 seconds in the 2007 tournament: “The tips of your ears start to ignite. The backs of your arms scream. Your throat burns as if somebody had stuck a [burning] torch down it.”
