Vest That 'Hugs' You After A Facebook Like (8th October, 2012)

Most people know what a Facebook 'Like' is. It's the little blue and white "thumbs up" icon we press when we like someone's comment, photo or video. A group of U.S. fashion designers have made a vest (sleeveless jacket) that immediately tells you when someone likes your post. The vest is connected to the Internet and it inflates when one of your posts is "Liked". Designer Melissa Chow says the jacket inflating lets us "feel the warmth, encouragement, support, or love that we feel when we receive hugs".

The vest has been called "Like-A-Hug". It was designed by Ms Chow and her co-designers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab. They wanted to create something that people could wear and that was interactive and personal. Once a person gets a hug from the vest, they can quickly send a hug back to the sender (if they are also wearing the jacket). The team wanted to take technology a step further than chat and video calls and looked at receiving hugs via wireless technology.
