Hollywood actress Katie Holmes is divorcing her actor husband Tom Cruise after nearly six years of marriage. The couple tied the knot in November 2006. They had a fairy-tale romance that included Cruise popping the question at the Eiffel Tower in Paris in June 2005. The wedding was in November 2006 at a 15th-century Italian castle. Mr Cruise's agent told the Associated Press news agency: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children."

Cruise, 50, and Holmes, 33, have both asked the media to respect their privacy. However, the world's press is sure to keep the story alive. They will probably focus on who gets what in the divorce settlement. There are reports that the couple had a pre-marriage agreement stating Holmes would receive their luxury California mansion and get $3 million for every year she stayed married to Cruise. Ms Holmes has also said she will fight to keep their six-year-old daughter Suri.
