China Opens More of Great Wall (10th June, 2012)

Beijing has announced it will open two new parts of the Great Wall of China. This is because the four parts that are currently open to tourists are always overcrowded, especially at weekends and on holidays. More and more visitors are going to China to see the Great Wall. Some of them climb the closed sections of the ancient structure, which damages the stone and brickwork. Beijing has also started building a Great Wall database, which will also be open to the public.

The Great Wall of China is frequently top of the list of world attractions people want to visit. Work started on it in 500BC to protect China's northern border. The Xinhua news agency recently reported that the wall is 21,196 km long. A 2009 study said it was 8,850km long. It is still the world's largest manmade structure. Only eight per cent of the wall is still standing, although most of it around Beijing is still in good condition. It became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1987.
