U.S. Surgeons With Drink/Drug Problems (23 February, 2012)

A new study says around 15 per cent of American surgeons have a problem with alcohol or drugs. The University of Washington team looked at 7,197 surveys from doctors who answered questions about drink and drugs. The research team was surprised so many doctors had problems. Their dependency was higher than the rate for the general population, which is 9 per cent. The team found that younger doctors, those with no children, or those in unsatisfactory relationships were more likely to drink or use drugs.

The report is published in the journal “Archives of Surgery”. It also said that doctors who showed signs of alcoholism were 45 per cent more likely to admit that they made a major mistake at work recently. Less than a third of the surgeons who received the survey answered it. Lead author Dr Michael Oreskovich said this may be because of doctors who did not want to answer because they were ashamed. The survey also said 14 per cent of male surgeons and 25 per cent of female surgeons had alcohol problems.
