Anti-Gay Riots in Serbia (11th October, 2010)

Several hundred protestors in Serbia have tried to stop the Gay Pride parade in the country’s capital, Belgrade. They fought with police in the streets and threw stones and petrol bombs. They also set fire to a garage, which is part of the ruling Democratic Party headquarters. The police used tear gas to fight back and break up the gangs. More than 50 people, mostly policemen, were injured. This was the first Gay Pride parade in the city since 2001. A march was planned last year but was cancelled because of fears of violence.

On Saturday, right-wing groups marched in the streets in protest at the Gay Pride march. They say that homosexuality goes against Serbian religious and family values. Democratic Party spokeswoman Jelana Trivan said the violence had nothing to do with moral values. She said: "These are hooligan gangs which must be punished severely". One of those taking part in the Gay Pride rally said: “It is a shame for me to march, to stand for what I am, and to have thousands of cops protect me.”
