The annual event is a way to highlight the problem of homelessness in the world. Its slogan is, “Beating homelessness through football”. The first competition took place in 2003 in Austria. In 2008, Afghanistan were World Champions and this year, Palestine and Haiti are making their debuts. More than 30,000 homeless men and women around the world have been in training and 64 national teams are competing in Rio. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "The Homeless World Cup has shown that football is a powerful tool in changing people’s lives.” The organizers hope to raise $9,500 through donations.
