Cuddles Brings Miracle Baby Back to Life (28th August, 2010)

An Australian mother refused to believe doctors who said her newborn baby was dead. Kate Oggs prematurely gave birth to twins Emily and Jamie – they both weighed a kilogram. Emily was healthy but doctors battled for 20 minutes to save her brother’s life. The doctor told Ms Oggs: “We've lost Jamie, he didn't make it, sorry.” She didn’t believe he was dead and cuddled him for two hours. Suddenly, Jamie started breathing and then opened his eyes. His mother said it was a miracle but she thought the skin-to-skin contact saved her son.

Jamie’s father David was very proud of his wife. He told Australia’s Channel 7 TV: "Luckily, I've got a very strong, very smart wife. She instinctively did what she did. If she hadn't done that, Jamie probably wouldn't be here." Ms Oggs has appeared on TV in Australia to advise all new mothers to hug their babies immediately after they are born. Doctors call this "kangaroo care", named after the way kangaroos care for their young after they are born. Experts say it creates a long-term bond between mother and baby.
