The social media website Facebook is allowing its young users to install a special button on their profile. Some people call it a “panic” button but it is really a link to report suspicious behavior. All parents worry about who their children are talking to online. There are many cases of adults tricking children, meeting them and then abusing them. In England, some children have been killed by people they met on Facebook. They thought they were meeting a new friend. The new app is a joint project between Facebook and Britain’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.

This is a great idea. It will mean children are safer when they use Facebook. The CEOP has already had a lot of success in finding criminals who want to harm children. The problem with Facebook is that you really don’t know who the strangers are. It is so easy for evil people to trick kids. Facebook spokeswoman Joanna Shields said: "Together we have developed a new way of helping young people stay safe online. It is only through the constant and [focused] efforts of the [Internet] industry, police, parents and young people themselves that we can all keep safe online."
