Ugandan Nuns Arrested for Growing Marijuana (11th June, 2010)

Police in Uganda have arrested two Catholic nuns after a drugs raid. Officers in Masaka district raided the Bwanda Covent after a tip-off that marijuana was growing. They found two acres of the plant. One of the nuns attacked the police to stop them from reaching the illegal plants. Uganda’s New Vision website said the police were surprised when the nuns struggled. One of the nuns told the police the marijuana was not for sale. She said they wanted to use it to treat farm animals.

This will be a difficult case for the court to decide. It is very unusual to hear about Catholic nuns growing marijuana. Perhaps even stranger are stories of them using it themselves. Growing marijuana in Uganda is illegal. Noah Serunjogi, a police spokesman, said, “no one is allowed to plant marijuana”. He added that other people might be taking advantage of the nuns to commit a crime. The nuns were later released by the police without being charged. However, police are now questioning two male workers from the convent.
